Assignment Desk Intern at NBC 10
I worked alongside reporters, assignment desk editors, producers, photographers, and multimedia journalists on a daily basis. Being in the heart of the news room has to be one of the most thrilling experiences I've ever come across.
My eagerness to immerse myself in local news happenings has driven my curiosity and allowed me to successfully pitch stories. My duties included assisting reporters on shoots, sorting and archiving rundowns from previous shows, and answering calls to the assignment desk with tips of local breaking news. I considered myself as the "first line of defense," when people called the station because some of the calls had to get through me first before they were forwarded to our editors! |

NBC 10 Web ArticleBy the end of my internship, I asked the assignment editor to write and post a news story on the NBC 10 website. I wanted to take the opportunity to write a news articles for the station as an intern.
The article I wrote was about an ongoing investigation in Massachusetts after a fatal shooting. I used information from ENPS and put together my own story based on the information released. One of our producers reviewed it and it was published online that day free of errors.. |
Working under PressureOn the last day of my internship, I was asked to attend a court hearing related to a Gold's Gym facility. I had to take notes, interview subjects on-camera, and bring all the information to our reporter before her live shot. I worked under pressure and successfully provided the reporter with the essential information she needed before she was live on the news with WJAR/NBC 10 at noon. I also assisted in tweeting from her Twitter account and called the information in to our web team for the online article.

Successful PitchIn addition to the standard list of intern duties, I also wanted to successfully pitch a story to WJAR/NBC 10 as an intern. This would be great practice to learn what is considered newsworthy and also to gain some experience in pitching stories.
I pitched a health program, SNAP-Ed, to our health reporter, Barbara Morse Silva. After weeks of following-up and putting together a press release, she covered one of the community workshops, which was aired on television and posted online. |
Intern RecognitionI had the tremendous honor of having the University of Rhode Island write an article about my experience in broadcast journalism, after a reporter saw a press release from URI about my internship with WJAR/NBC 10. Elizabeth Rau, the reporter who interviewed me highlighted all of my internship experiences, but focused primarily on my position with NBC 10. I showed her my demo reel, which was completed throughout my internship and told her memorable stories about my interning at the station, such as covering hit and run accidents, fatal shootings, and other breaking news happenings in Rhode Island.
