Capable of entry-level multimedia work in broadcast and print journalism
When I decided I wanted to major in journalism, I wasn't sure which aspect I wanted to go into. Deciding between print and broadcast journalism didn't come easy, but because I was interested in learning about all aspects of journalism, I explored multiple paths. I began by writing for The Good Five-Cent Cigar, URI's student newspaper, which helped me improve my writing and interviewing skills. In addition to taking newspaper and magazine writing classes, the out of classroom experience of writing articles each week taught me a lot about working on deadlines.
Once I began writing for the Cigar more regularly, I realized how much I enjoyed working on individual projects. This sparked my interest in internships and I have since completed six related to media and journalism. My internship experiences have allowed me to immerse myself in news gathering and have afforded me the opportunity to learn from experts in the industry. Throughout my internship positions, I have written and edited VOs (voice overs), VOSOTs (voice over sound on tape), teases for newscasts and have written scripts used in shows. All of these opportunities have allowed me to strengthen my skills as a reporter and have given me a taste of what working in a newsroom is like.
For the purpose of this learning outcome, I have included multimedia packages I put together in classes and internships. The packages are shot, edited, and written by me, with the exceptions of the winter storm and flooding package. The reporters I worked with shot the video footage for those two packages, but I wrote and edited them together. I can edit video packages on softwares such as Final Cut Pro, EDIUS, AVID and iMovie.
My earlier packages from JOR 221 and 320 are a representation of my work in the earliest stages of my career as reporter. Since then, I have improved my shooting and editing skills and have since become more comfortable and confident putting together packages. My stories from Verizon FiOS1 News and WJAR/NBC 10 are stronger and a better representation of where my skills are now in broadcast journalism. I am proud to say that my work in and outside the classroom has allowed me to become a better reporter and I can confidently say I am capable of entry level multimedia work in broadcast and print journalism.
